Reading Reflection #2. How I learned English

While reading this article, I remind my English learning style and teaching method. Tomasz P. Szynalski(wrote this article) has worked mainly as an English-Polish translator. I think that the environment of Polish English education is similar to Korea’s. He started learning English when he was 6 years old. For 8 years he learned English the way everybody does, it was awfully ineffective. On the other hand, when his father bought him computer he started playing lots of adventure games. While playing these games he would read a lot of English sentences and after some time he gained a little “grammar intuition”. He thought that it is possible that adventure games had taught him more than English classes. After that he started to learn English seriously because he wanted to improve himself, communicate with the world, or even get good grades and well-paying job. Every day, after school, he watched American TV. As a result, he is getting better and better at understanding spoken English. He was also picking up some words and phrases that he could use in his own sentences. He started reading books in English and then added new words to his Super Memo. And he started writing e-mail in English and spent thousands of hours talking to friends in English. He was motivated because he was enjoying his own progress. He wrote the advantage that English gives you. First, with English, he can learn more about anything he is interested in. Second, he can write for the whole world. Third, he can communicate with virtually all educated people in the world. Forth, he gets excellent entertainment. Fifth, he has more fun watching movies and playing computer games. Also, he can go to any English-speaking country and communicate easily. After reading this article, I realized that the way of learning has to focus on the interest of learner and instructor has to encourage students to enjoy learning process. This article can help my teaching for language learner. And I will try to give more authentic materials to students are interested in.

Reading Reflection #1. Designing CALL Programs and Activities

When I teach my students in my classroom I often use some computer tools like presentation programs, word processors, sound recording and editing tools. I think they help learners to remember, comprehend, apply, and reflect on information. I consider that how my materials can be more effective to my students. After reading the journal I got information about my worry. There are some considerations for the design of CALL programs, pedagogy first and technology second, computer interactivity and pedagogical interactivity. When creating CALL programs, it would be important to remember that the element that is in control at all times should be the pedagogy, rather than technology. Technical considerations are also important, but without good-quality content and good pedagogical support, the use of advanced technology does not guarantee the success of computer-assisted learning materials. To create a multimedia CALL program it would be essential to consider: the target learners, the language level of the learners, the purpose of the program, the pedagogical approach, the appropriate use of technology, and the learning context etc. CALL programs design principles include lots of useful information for designing my materials. First, content design would be considered brevity, comprehensibility, accuracy, interest, and organization. Second, visual design should include consistency, good use of space, legibility, careful use of color, contrast, repetition, alignment, and proximity.  Third, navigation design should provide easy and clear navigation and information for recovery if users get into trouble. Also, multimedia design should be considered high-quality playback and media file size. I will apply this rule to my call materials.

Buffet Reflection

I explored lots of CALL tools and resources we've covered so far.

First, I would like to apply some funny photos using manipulation tools and Wordle to motivate students. I can create funny photos and very attractive visual images easily.

Second, Padlet as a board which students are able to share their ideas or information together. It is very useful.

Third, editing audio tools(Voki and Clyp it)  could be applied to making audio files of quiz or test.

Fourth, social bookmarking (Diigo) is very useful for me to record the address of a website to enable quick access in future.

Also, social networking could be very useful for teaching and learning English. I will get lots of materials, share information and contact some people.

My thoughts on activity resources

http://www.eslkidstuff.com/ I think this website could be very useful. When I taught English I applied games very often to my calsses. Through playing games, singing songs and chant children can learn English naturally. Now I am a homeroom teacher. If I have a chance to be an English teacher I would like to applied these activities on this website. Especially Elementary Kids will love craft sheets for kids.
